Safety Rules
Safety comes first on every Desertica course and event. These rules apply to everyone, every time — no exceptions.
Before You Arrive
- Get a good night's sleep — fatigue is the single most common contributor to off-road incidents.
- Do not attend under the influence of alcohol or any substance affecting judgement, including some prescription medications.
- Bring water, closed-toe footwear, and sun protection.
Vehicle & Equipment
- If you're bringing your own vehicle: a fully functional, roadworthy 4WD or AWD suitable for desert terrain, full tank of fuel, spare tyre in workable condition, and working seatbelts for every occupant.
- Recovery equipment — compressor, rope, radio — is provided by Desertica. You don't need to bring your own.
On the Day
- Every session starts with a mandatory safety briefing. You must attend the full briefing before driving.
- Seatbelts are worn by all occupants at all times.
- Children must be secured in an age-appropriate car seat. We don't recommend participation for children under 3.
- Follow your Instructor's directions at all times — the session is not the place to debate them; ask questions at the debrief.
- Keep the vehicle behind you in view. If you lose sight of them, slow down and call it on the radio.
- Never overtake another vehicle in convoy without being told to.
- If you get stuck, call it on the radio and stay put — do not attempt aggressive self-recovery.
In an Emergency
- UAE emergency numbers: 999 (police / general emergency), 998 (ambulance), 997 (fire / civil defence), 995 (search & rescue — for anyone lost or stranded in the desert).
- Your Instructor becomes incident lead in a medical emergency. Follow their direction.
Environmental Conditions
- We reserve the right to cancel or reroute a session at the Instructor's discretion in poor visibility, heavy rain, or extreme heat (forecast above 48°C). If we cancel, you'll be offered a full refund or an alternative date.
- Summer sessions run early morning or after sunset.
Respecting the Desert
- Pack out everything you bring in.
- Avoid driving over vegetation where possible.
- Observe wildlife at a distance — never approach or feed it.
